Salvador, capital of Bahia, has a calendar of popular festivals that celebrate various Catholic saints. For many years, especially during the 1970s and 1980s, street festivals were filled with colorful stalls selling food and drinks. Starting in the 1990s, these urban works of art were eliminated by municipal decree. In their place, standardized plastic and metal stalls were installed, completely erasing a popular culture that expressed itself through the façades, tables, and benches of these stalls.
