Os Cãos de Jacobina

During the famous micareta of Jacobina, in Bahia, a legendary battle is waged between the Cãos de Jacobina and Saint Michael over the fate of a soul. Saint Michael wants to take it to heaven, while the Cãos want to drag it to hell.

The participants of the Cãos de Jacobina play an important role in the aesthetics and animation of the micareta, drawing attention with their costumes adorned with horns and tridents, and with their bodies painted black.

Saint Michael, on the other hand, is the divine herald tasked with trying to lead the soul to heaven, but the Cãos refuse to accept its destiny in paradise and fight bravely for possession of the soul in question.

The war between these two opposing forces is epic and unending, with battles fought amid the excitement and revelry of the micareta, along the route from the cemetery to the city’s main church.

And so, the confrontation between good and evil is perpetuated, consecrating Saint Michael as the victor and nourishing the legends and traditions of the historic micareta of Jacobina.
